Programs at DoD STARBASE Houston

Engaging students in hands-on learning experiences that foster critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and real-world problem-solving skills

At STARBASE Houston

At STARBASE Houston, we are dedicated to inspiring and equipping the next generation of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Design, and Mathematics) innovators. Our programs are designed to engage students in hands-on learning experiences that foster critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and real-world problem-solving skills. We offer programs for 5th graders, as well as advanced courses for middle and high school students through after-school programs and summer camps.

The STARBASE Basic program provides 5th-grade students with a 25-hour, five-day immersive STEAM experience. Aligned with state and national standards, the curriculum integrates key STEAM concepts with engaging, hands-on projects. Students explore subjects like physics, chemistry, and computer-aided design (CAD), gaining exposure to cutting-edge technologies such as 3D printing and robotics. Beyond academics, the program emphasizes teamwork, collaboration, and the practical application of science and math in everyday life.

Applications for the next school year program are accepted starting in January each year and continue through the spring.  Schools are selected upon a variety of criteria including Title I status.  STARBASE sends out selection notifications in May.  Those schools that are not selected will be put on a waiting list and notified if an opening becomes available.

For students ready to take their STEAM knowledge to the next level, STARBASE offers advanced programs designed for middle school students. These programs provide 20 additional hours of instruction through more complex projects and challenges. Currently we offer a Forensic Science Curriculum that explores the scientific principles behind various investigative fields, all while working under the mentorship of STEAM professionals and military personnel.  Students will have the opportunity to:

Become a blood spatter analyst to learn about how distances and sizes of blood stains are related.

Gain first-hand experience with DNA by extracting and analyzing samples from various sources.

Work with industry professionals to gain real world knowledge about STEM careers.

Our summer camps extend the DoD STARBASE experience beyond the school year, providing students with opportunities to explore STEAM subjects in a fun and focused environment. Designed with a specialized 20-hour curriculum, these camps cater to a range of interests, from drone technology and robotics to engineering and coding. Open to all students, the camps place special emphasis on engaging underrepresented groups and military families.  We cover topics such as:

Rube Goldberg: Design and build whimsical machines to accomplish simple tasks through hilariously complex and creative processes.

Rocketry: Hands-on challenges in rocket design and propulsion.

Coding and Robotics: Learn to code robots while tackling fun, interactive tasks and developing technical skills.

Collaborative Engineering: Solve real-world problems through team-based engineering projects.

Computer Aided Design (CAD): Use CAD software to draw, design, and build really cool things!

Forensics: Use science to solve mysteries by analyzing clues such as fingerprints, DNA, unknown substances, blood typing, and more!!
